Copenhagen Day 3
An okay sleep last night. I did wake up about 3am and took a while to get back to sleep. Dorian and Jessie arrived last evening, so all 6 of us met for breakfast just after 7am. The sun is out today, and it's a little warmer, about 23C by midday.
Today we are using the 2nd day on our HOHO ticket. We caught the Classic line bus over to get the Canal boat for that portion of the tour. The first sailing was at 10am, and we had a full boat. The tour lasts 1 hour and was excellent. We saw lots of different areas from commercial to residential. There are many old factory or naval buildings that are now converted to housing or commercial use. Copenhagen has so many interesting buildings both old and new. And because industries are located outside of the city, it's very clean. There aren't too many large cities that you can swim in the water in the middle of town! Copenhagen is on target to become carbon neutral by 2025.
After the canal boat ride we walked over to Nyhaven, the iconic harbour area with the boats and colored houses. It was crazy busy, so we just had a quick look around, took some pictures and walked back to the bus stop for the Colorful Copenhagen route. This took us over to a different area the other side of the city with many residential areas on canal-front, and the free-town of Christiania. There is an area where many people from Copenhagen have garden plots, most with tiny cottages. There is also an area that was once industrial that is being reclaimed for residential and park land. It's really pretty. This is also the location of CopenHill. It's a plant that burns waste to produce energy. On top they have built a ski hill and hiking trail! Just another example of innovative Danish design.
Because it's Saturday there are a lot of people out enjoying the sun, having brunch or coffee. Not too much car traffic today, but lots of pedestrians and bikes. There is a big Pride Parade so some streets are closed.
I had a mid-day rest, then a walk around the Meat Packing district with it's many new restaurants and bars. We went for an early dinner at a traditional Danish restaurant very close to our hotel.(Frk. Barners Kaelder) A lovely evening to sit outside. Some of the choices for tonight were herring done 4 ways, schnitzel and pork stew. I had fried plaice with a parsley sauce, a very tasty flat fish with delicate flesh. (and much less heavy than many things on the menu!) Karen and I went for a walk around the outside of Tivoli to see the lights. Very pretty in the dusk!
