Copenhagen Day 1 Local food tour

A very smooth journey. We flew Air Canada via Montreal in Premium Economy. Flights were full and airports were busy. The new normal. We did carry-on baggage only, and most people have a lot of carry-on suitcases and extra articles. There is usually a difficulty finding room for it all. Surprisingly these days, both flights were early. The service and comfort level in Premium Economy were good.

An early morning sunny arrival in Copenhagen. There was about a 1/2 hour lineup for passport control. To get to the city center you can buy a train ticket for 30 DKK (about 6CAD) trains are frequent from the station at the airport and take about 20 minutes to the main station. Our hotel is about a 5 min walk from the station.

Because we had arrived so early, we couldn't check into our room. But because Karen & Aaron had arrived the day before we had a rest in their room while they went for a walk, then did an early check-in at 11:30am. I had a short nap, then at 2:30pm joined Karen and Aaron to walk over to meet for our Walking Food tour. This was excellent. Our guide Claudio was 1/2 Danish and 1/2 Italian. He not only knew a lot about food, but history as well. We tried so many things, and visited some small local stores and restaurants that we would never have found ourselves. We also learned about the history of many of the foods. Here are some of the highlights:

Smorrebrod- open faced sandwiches. The ones we tried were roast pork with pickled cabbage, pickles and orange.

Tebirkes - a Danish pastry with marzipan filling and poppy seeds on top. Very popular and the bakery we were at sells out by 9am!

Hot dog - The Danish have a tradition of taking something and figuring out how to make it better. So their hot dogs have upscale ingredients and a few extra twists like roasted onion and remoulade sauce. The hot dog stands around town started as a social initiative.

Frikadeller - This is like a meatball, but eaten on it's own or with a dipping sauce. We tried 3 types. A traditional pork/veal, a cod, and "New Nordic" porridge one made with grains including barley. All delicious!

Our tour ended at a food hall/market about 6:30pm. We walked back to our hotel and I opted for an early night!
