Copenhagen Day 2

We slept well last night, and feeling ready for breakfast. It's raining very lightly, but forecast to clear by the time we're planning to do the Hop-on Hop-off bus. The breakfast buffet offers a wonderful buffet featuring natural yogurt with many toppings, fruit, vegetables, breads, cheeses and meats. Also eggs and pancakes. We decide to catch the first bus at 9:10am to beat the crowds. We did the Classic route, a good tour to get oriented in the city (about 1 1/2 hours) Then the Green suburb route (about 45min). The commentary was good on both tours, and easy to hear. It doesn't seem too busy this morning, I'm sure it will change by afternoon.

By this time it's almost noon, so a short walk to the Food Hall at Tivoli to Hallernes Smorrebrot. I had an egg and shrimp smorrebrot with a glass of pilsner for 115DKK or about 23CAD.

Back to the hotel for a bit of a rest.

In the afternoon Karen and I head over to the Round Tower. It was built by a Danish king in the 17th century as an observatory. Instead of steps, it has a wide walkway so he could ride up the tower on horseback. There is a 40DKK entrance fee to walk up for a great view of the city. Afterwards we walked through some of the pedestrian streets, and down towards Gammel Strand and Christiansborg Palace. Karen headed back to the hotel, and I continued on to "Castle Island" that has many interesting buildings. Along with the palace there are several museums, the Black Diamond library and the Block Danish architecture centre. Also a good place to walk along the river and watch the boats and the swimmers. Because Copenhagen has moved industry outside the city, it is now possible to swim safely in the harbour. There are electric boats for hire, including some with a catered lunch served!

The sun came out in the late afternoon, and it got up to about 22C. Very pleasant. The streets are very busy now! I walked back past Tivoli Gardens and the Hans Christian Anderson statue. By that time I really needed to put my feet up and have a cold Carlsburg pilsner!

This evening we had an earlyish dinner in the Meat packing area near our hotel. This is now a very trendy area with lots of restaurants and bars. We ate at a fish restaurant called Hooked. Think fish and chips, but with a Danish twist. I had fish with a lovely salad, and the fish had a wonderful crisp coating that was not greasy. With a beer about 200DKK each, so about $40.00CAD. Great people watching in this area. Back to our hotel and looking forward to a good sleep.
